Plant Care
Cooler days, calmer plants

Caring for your greenery in winter
As the cooler months settle in, our routines naturally slow down—and so do our plants. Winter may not bring frost to every corner of Australia, but even a subtle shift in light, temperature, and humidity can change what our plants need from us.
Now’s the time to pause, observe, and adjust. Here are a few simple tips to help your plants stay healthy and happy this season—with a little help from some of our most-loved Elsk tools.

Ease back on watering?
In winter, most indoor and potted plants shift into a slower growth phase, meaning their water needs drop dramatically. Overwatering during this time can lead to soggy roots and fungal issues.
What to do:
Check moisture before watering—feel the soil to check that it is dry before watering. If the top few inches are dry, it's time for a drink. If not, hold off. Make sure your pot isn't sitting in water, empty the tray if there is any overflow. If you are unsure, use our Watermate products to help you water your potted plants. These self-watering devices attach to the side of your pot and ensures there is no over or under watering, taking the guess work out. Check them out here.

Protect from pests
……and from air conditioning
As windows stay closed and heaters or split systems kick in, indoor air gets drier and air movement changes. This not only stresses plants but also creates ideal conditions for common pests like spider mites, scale, and mealybugs.
What to do:
Keep plants away from direct blasts of heated or cooled air. Monitor leaves for signs of pests, like sticky residue or tiny webs. Wipe leaves regularly with a soft cloth to keep them clean and breathing well.
A light mist of Protect our botanical leaf spray—helps strengthen your plant’s natural defences while giving foliage a subtle, healthy sheen.

Let in the light
With shorter days and lower sun angles, your plant’s usual spot may no longer cut it. You might notice leaves stretching or losing colour.
What to do:
Shift light-hungry plants closer to bright windows, and rotate them every few weeks to keep their shape balanced. Keep foliage clear of cold glass and away from draughts.
